Agreed, it was a good year. Good list. My list will be different from yours, but we do have some albums in common. The Libertines broke up already? I have a weird relationship with that Chris Stamey album - I like the first few songs a lot, but then I can't really take the rest of the album. I need to listen to it some more.

As usual, I'm far too out of it to have a top N list, but the 2004 album that no one comes over to my house without hearing is Residue by Amy X. Neuburg. Check it out: http://www.isproductions.com/amy/presskit.html

Tim, I checked out some of Amy's songs. Wow, scary and brilliant..."Every Little Stain" in particular. Thanks for the tip, I've never heard of her!

Re Robyn Hitchcock: the instrumentation isn't *too* Nashville-y though - it's not as if he suddenly grew a twang. There's the occasional dobro...but really, what's interesting to me about the record is the way it both sounds different from the typical "acoustic Robyn" but not like what you'd expect a collaboration with Rawlings and Welch to sound like. (My list should be up within a week.)

2fs; exactly. I am not a Gillian/David fan (no offense to the lot of you who are), and I was worried that Robyn was slipping a bit , based on last year's Luxor. So it was a really pleasant surprise to hear these folks bringing out the best in each other...and, yes, what I like about the Nashville-y instrumentation is that it does not = "Robyn Goes Country," it just adds some depth and interest.

hey paula, i was just doing one of my daily searches for press on my bf's album (which is in yr honorable mentions, thank you very much), and lo and behold, i stumbled 'pon yr bloglike object. hope you are well. due to strong bias, i won't comment on one of yr picks, but i will say that the a. c. newman, while not one of my favorites, does have my favorite song of the year, "on the table". i also liked carl's album more than the new pornographers.
