Just chiming in to second the vote on "In the Realms of the Unreal" -- I saw it earlier this year at a doc-fest in L.A. -- and I found it strangely moving, in a way that documentaries (especially doc.s about "Art" w/ a capital "A") don't usually effect me. It was much more centered around creating a mood and certain feelings, as opposed to just disseminating information, than doc.s typically are. I think that was definitely the right approach for this subject matter, as the actual events of Darger's life are really not that insightful (or even interesting). Should be on the "must-see' list for this year.

My day to add comments, apparently -- will definitely take a look at Gretel's book, as I too share a preoccupation unto obsession w/ cold weather and winter. Yes, I realize that I live in L.A.. No, I don't know what the hell I'm doing there either. . .

I don't think "In the Realms of the Unreal" has made it to Moo-town yet, but I'll keep an eye out. I mostly wanted to express my pleasure at your use of the word "ginchy", and your reference to the way Isadora Duncan died, one of the useless facts that clutter up my mind and prevent me from remebering to buy cream when I go to the store. I like Winter, but I don't like being cold for very long. About 5 minutes outside, and I'm ready to be home in front of a roaring heat vent, dressed in a furry sweater and flannel-lined jeans with a hot toddy in hand.
