Having traveled to Canada quite a bit in the last few years, I have become a fan of Tim Hortons, which is essentially the DD of Canada. It has a US presence, too, but more in the midwest. I find its coffee to be a cut above DD and the food's not bad, either.

I've had Tim Hortons in Candian rest stops--good stuff.Black as midnight on a moonless night.

Good Lord! Only a Northerner could think DD makes good doughnuts. (Not that KK get it right.) Even the mamby-pamby Publix supermarket chain's bakeries down here do better, when it comes to glazed, than those two do.

Strangely enough, I don't go to DD for the donuts--it's the coffee.

Not strangely at all... and sorry I regionistically impugned your doughnut discernment. (I just saw the opportunity to alert New Yorkers that even non-cake-style Krispy Kreme's glazed are not actually representative of a good, yeasty, airy Southern-fried dough ring.)
