"DAVID: It is...there are times when you are in the midst of all these voices, being carried along, and all you have to do is get to the end of the song. For a few minutes... it's that simple." That quote really kinda annoyed me. Dunno bout you, but I almost NEVER feel like that -- a given song is usually a map of bumps to get over -- keep the tempo coming outta the bridge, stay aware of the other backing vocalist's pitch on the 2nd chorus, stay alert to that fill where we sometimes drop a beat. even with feckless -- where i'd been playing some of the songs for 7 or 8 years -- few, if any, let the whole band go on autopilot.

I didn't hear it as "auto-pilot" at all. What moved me about this conversation (and maybe it doesn't translate well in print) is that he seems to be saying "here is this little zen garden, all we have to do is tend it for 3 minutes." Music as life, but also as a controllable world.

I read it Paula's way - but aren't there times, s.v., when you are feeling carried along by the music: say, when you and the drummer sync up perfectly on a little improvised fill or something? Those are moments, to be sure, that are possible only after much work - but in those moments, the work disappears and is made worthwhile.

That's also what meditation is, in the yogic tradition: not the sitting and thinking a mantra, but the (rare!) moments when you lose yourself completely and enter the blissful void. But it's understood that all the sitting and all the mantra-repetition are what lead to those moments, so you need to put in the man-hours, too.

In the same way, that's why musicians need to practice and slog through rehearsals, so they can reach those moments that are beyond effort and practice.
