I appreciate films that suck if for no other reason than your reviews.

I saw Pan's Labyrinth yesterday, which so the opposite of sucked that I was amazed. I cried like a baby at the end, too - something I don't do usually now that I'm almost 35.

I dare you to watch that movie and not cry. Go on.

Bina: I have actually become more of a crybaby in my old age--I never cried at movies, and never in public when I was younger. Now, it's waterworks all the time. This weekend, I got misty when I had to throw out my hairdryer, which I've had since 1996.

Anyway, I loved Pan's Labyrinth, it's an amazing film.

I've yet to see Pan's Labyrinth and keep meaning to. Will check out a rental this week. Re Mavis Staples--utterly amazing voice, never diminished. When I want serious inspiration I put on The Weight, from The Last Waltz soundtrack with the whole Staples crew joining in. That's actually made me weepy.

I'm the opposite, Paula. I used to cry all the time when I was young. Now I don't as much. I guess I've gotten tougher - but one thing I can never stop from doing is crying when I'm truly angry and enraged.

The last movie that I saw in a theater that got me seriously weepy (although I have to admit that Pan's Labyrinth had me choked up some) was The Iron Giant. Yes, I know it's an animated movie for children; still, I had to wait until the entire rest of the audience left the theater before I could.

Since I been sober it's been harder to bawl at the movies... I actually cried a bit along with everyone else in the theater during MADEA'S FAMILY REUNION during this rousing speech by Cecily Tyson. Say what you want, the film managed to be a lot of things at the same time, one of which was the sort of crowd pleaser that has audience members smiling at each other when they leave, as if healed of their alienation from one another; Dave Chapelle's Block Party also served that purpose... we need more films like that!! I cry whenever I watch IRON GIANT

Iron Giant????? Seriously???

I've had so many men tell me that they teared up at Iron Giant (including a certain exspouse who famously does not get emotional about many things) that I have decided to queue this and see what the hoopla is about.
