Despite the many critical accolades, your review pretty much mirrors what I heard from everyone I actually know who saw this. I'll probably see it anyway, as I actually went to Film School with one of the co-producers of the film. There, I've discharged my name-dropping duties for this month -- well, this week, anyways.

Well, shock you. This was a VERY good movie. Some songs weren't good, but I think most were,(especially Beyonce's solo - written for the film) and the acting was great. I saw it in an empty theater at an 11pm showing. At the end of the film, the 10 people in the theater clapped like it was live theater. Honestly, I felt like clapping too.

Believe me, I wanted to like the movie, and I wish I'd had the experience you describe, but I just didn't.

I took my mother and sister to see the original stage production and though this was period in my life when I was even cooler than now (if you can believe it), I was really impressed. That said, I think musicals need the stage or big screen... the energy of an audience. I'm not really a big fan of musical theater though, or musical films.

I didn't see the movie, nor have I seen the original, but I did see this Youtube clip of Jennifer Holliday on the 1982 Tonys, and it blew me away: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kC_u_q-iND0&mode=related&search=

Paula--I think there was a Supremes movie at some point in the last 20 years but it may have been a TV thing. I looked for it online but couldn't find it.

Retraction--a production company had started the whole process and then canned it in the face of Miss Ross' army of lawyers.
