Thanks for the plug, P. -- an especial recommendation for you: Mike Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky. Perhaps not his best -- but anything from Leigh is a treat: this one's no exception!

If, according to Price's article "The RIAA sold fewer CDs in 2008 than 1982", the music business is in bad shape. CDs didn't even enter the market until October 1982!

I thought that grigorss's list was fun, and shared some of my own responses and sensibility. I thought that In Bruges, Wrestler, Man on Wire, and Let The Right One In were strong, strong flicks, but wanted to pipe up and recommend Happy Go Lucky -- only to find he had already done so! If you like those, I'd also recommend I've Loved You So Long and possibly A Girl Cut In Two, which I can't wholeheartedly recommend, but which features a layered and complex performance from Ludivine Sagnier. And keep your eyes open for Time Crimes, which is out now.

Thanks for your thoughts Muleboy; I actually got a chance to see Time Crimes when it played at a festival showing here in L.A. -- but it got such a half-hearted theatrical release in the U.S. that I decided to just wait on writing it up till it gets a DVD release (presumably later this year); it was one of the better films I saw in '08 though. There's a U.S. remake in the works -- with Cronenberg attached to direct, I believe.

My coworker also heartily recommended Timecrimes, so that, too has been 'flixed.

I missed that one too during its week release in NYC.

Oh oh. The dreaded U.S. remake. Well, it was never really in doubt; the movie is too clever -- and too compelling and nicely paced -- not to invite a remake. I won't comment on Cronenberg; I'll just say that I found Karra Elejalde *so* watchable (fascinating, actually) that I feel sorry for whatever Hollywood name/face is tapped to take on the role of Hector. Hey, everybody -- queue up for Cronocrimines before Time Crimes hits the multiplex!

I can't help but think that the ostensibly "random" Zip Code mentioned in the Jeff Price screed ("02134") had been seared into his brain from watching Zoom on PBS.

I used to live in the 02134 ZIP code - Allston, MA, where the Boston-based public TV affiliate WGBH is located. It was amazing how many people recognized my ZIP as the "Zoom" ZIP code.

Some IHoP readers still live in that zip code, in fact!
