1) Didn't care much for Bright Eyes when I finally heard it. It was bad enough they pegged that kid as the second (or is third?) coming of Dylan... I saw him do a terrible version of "The Slider", a T. Rex song I adore, with Yo La Tengo at Maxwell's and it put me off him for good. 2) I'd love to call you sexist but it sound like you're right. The M/F dynamic can be a horrible thing to witness. I was out with some friends the other night, 2 men and a woman, all single, and I was personally offended by how competitive the men became. I was set adrift as they focused solely on the girl, telling their best jokes and stories until all I could hear in my head was the song "Ape Man" at full volume (maybe it was on the jukebox). I'm sure women compete in their own ways but with men it can be just brutal. I wanted to walk home but couldn't bear to leave my female friend alone with those two. So I got drunk.
