There is the great book, life and death of Great American Cities by Jane Jacobs, one of the people responsible for ending the reign of Robert Moses here in NY. When you read about the Ratner development you end up wondering if the lessons from that book have been learned. I am not one to believe that it was so much better in the past, because it wasnt. But Brooklyn hit its stride about three years ago; just the correct amount of new development that made a very livable neighborhood even better: The low slung aesthetics coupled with the feeling of confederation of communities that was devoid of large monoliths has created a wonderful borough. Between the Ratner development and some of the larger projects in Williamsburg and Greenpoint one gets the feeling its slipping away.

hell, yeah, they've been learned! By the people who have made it their job to protest his stupid development plans. The spirit of Jane Jacobs lives on in Prospect Heights, believe me.

Well, I personally am more of a stand-by supporter. The people of DDDB are the ones who are really slogging through this mess.
