It seems that Gilgamesh is the last great undiscovered Mythic figure (at least, undiscovered by most people who are familiar with the other major Euro-myths; and by movie and TV adaptations); it hasn't been plundered by pop culture like the Greek, Norse and Celtic mythologies for reasons that will become clear as you read on (no spoilers from me, that's for sure).

The introduction is fantastic. Seriously! Read it after if you didn't read it before.

There've been a few plunderings--most notably Robert Silverberg's Gilgamesh The King, but the Brothers Quay also did a film version (although I must admit that the relationship to the text was too obscure for me to make out). I've even done a bit meself.

Oh, lordy--I have this CD, folks, and it's haunting and lovely. I didn't make the G-mesh connection. I while play it while reading. And just for the record, I did skim the intro so I would have a small idea of what the hell I was about to tackle.

And don't forget the Disney cartoon "Gilgy and the Seven Sages," which featured Don Knotts as the loveable ffspring of Lugalbanda.

I can't believe I forgot my favorite piece of Gilgameshiana, Geoff Ryman's bizarre, brilliant The Warrior Who Carried Life. (Ryman is most famous as the author of Was.)

I got around to reading that Ryman interview at lunch--he's a smart fella, I'd like to read his books.
