Peculiarly (since I'm a moody, eccentric half-German myself) that's exactly NOT the kind of music I listen to when cleaning around the house -- it's usually some sort of pop. Motown works nice; I'll throw in something like Thievery Corporation just to mix it up. And of course for the really dirty jobs you just can't beat Tom Waits. Speaking of things musical, Ween has a new (self-released) album out called "Shinola, vol.1". As far as I'm concerned, it's another triumph, but since I love every album they've done, you probably can't trust me.

Bartlett's Roget's Thesaurus (a book)lists "purist" under the headings "discriminator" (along with critic, selector, judge, connoisseur, gourmet, epicure, idealist, pedant, perfectionist, quibbler and hairsplitter) and "perfectionist" (along with pedant, stickler, perfecter, expert and master). Perhaps I'm splitting hairs by thinking none of those precise. But what's the context?

I was gonna say idealist, not as a true synonym, but as a word with a lot of overlap, a purist seeks the ideal in purity, the idealist seeks the purity of the ideal...(?)

Purist is synonomous with "pain in the heinie!" Not a single google-able image of this Purita Clarino, which a purist might say is a good thing, because after all, it's just not the same as seeing one of the original mostion picture releases, pre-restoration, with a life orchestra playing the soundtrack.

Those are all great words (hi Janet!) but none of 'em fit the bill. I was talking about a particular blues musician who plays straight-up blues, not cut with any other musical form, and "purist" would have been perfect, but another online review used a similar word, and we have to be really careful about stuff like that.

I ended up just taking a different approach altogether.

Tom, I was wondering about that Ween album, whether it was new or some older reissue.

Paula -- all new Ween, and despite the fact that it seems to be self-released, it is available in some stores (I picked mine up at Amoeba, which seems to get everything, self-released or no...). It's a really solid album, not as great as "Quebec", but then again, what could be?

more on Shinola -- I can't confirm this; but I suspect it may be made up of unreleased tracks and such from over the years -- but definitely material that hasn't been released before. I would know.

My favorite instrumental CD lately is 4x4 by Andy Mattina and his three friends. It can hold my attention as well as stuff with vocals and lyrics and such.

My favorite instrumental CD is a field recording from Australia, all didgeridoo and clicking sticks (which there is probably a name for). I've found when played at the right volume, it cancels out migraine pain, my back pain and other afflictiosn. I'm 100% not kidding--it only works while it's playing though. Sharps--on another note--just listened to your album last night, and played it all day at work. Soooo good. Wow... haven't tried it on a migraine, but I tellya what. It had everybody in my immediate vicinity feeling really good.

The clicking sticks are just called sticks, but sometimes they're sticks hit on hollow logs, and sometimes they are pairs of boomerangs clicked together for deeper noises.

I realize it's way too late, but, should you ever need a really clunky, thesaurus-sounding synonym for purist, try "hundred percenter".

That's a good'un. Thanks!
