Iris Brown? That's kind of clever in its own right, isn't it? Agreed, putting my feelings for Hillary Clinton aside, it's absolutely tremendous not only that she's running but probably has a really good shot at the nomination and hence the presidency. Of course with an expanding budget deficit, a war that cannot be won, and other various woes, no matter who wins is going to have their hands full.

Hooray for new Weetzie Bat! I know it's professionally not-with-it of me, but I learned about this on IHOP five minutes ago. Thanks dear!

Janet: Yeah, the book sure wasn't publicized much.

One thing I can say about the Weetzie Bat books--they always make me want to write fiction.

Greg: Oh, I see, like brown eyes?

So I was pondering the Clinton/Obama thing a little more and it struck me that we do take a lot for granted, but I think of the progress I've been blessed to witness in my lifetime... still a long way to go, but consider the plight of these women. But the world of the American suffragettes wasn't so far removed from the situation in Afghanistan, and it wasn't that long ago. So... there is still hope.

Margaret Chase Smith made a serious run for the 1964 Republican nomination: http://www.mcslibrary.org/bio/biog.htm

I'd forgotten about MCS actually though I remember her story mostly from the HUAC stuff. I'd always maintained that for various reasons that the first woman and/or African-American in the White House would be a Republican and I still believe that to be likely---HOWEVER, given current events the GOP is likely to throw the presidency for 2008 and run hard for senate and house seats. That gives the Dem candidate an easy ride in... cynical??? Yes, I am.

The black man running is a white man too.

amatt: Not sure exactly what you mean. Obama's of "mixed" parentage, yes...but then, back several generations, so are most African-Americans. (Unfortunately, not always of their choice.) "Black" is more a culture - or cultures, really - than a color anyway. Regardless, it's interesting that until Paula mentioned it, I actually hadn't particularly noticed that two of the frontrunners for the Democratic nomination are black or female. I guess that's progress... 'Course, I don't particularly like either of them for President: Clinton for her politics, Obama because it's just too damned soon. Too bad Feingold decided not to run (and perhaps give us our first Jewish president - I just hope *that* distinction doesn't ultimately fall to Joe Lieberman).

You probably would have if you were black or female, cuz it would mean more to you.

Sorry to play the very rare-for-me gender card, but that's just the way it is. I've heard back from a couple of female friends (who are, appparently too shy to post comments!) that basically reiterated my feelings: not crazy about Hillary, but dang if it doesn't feel unexpectedly blissful to see her up there.

You probably would have if you were black or female, cuz it would mean more to you. True... I mean, obviously I "noticed" - it's just that usually I think of them more in terms of their politics, their positions, the way the media treats them, etc. For a while, it seemed plausible that the 2008 election might feature Clinton vs. Condoleezza Rice...which would be an interesting race for bigots. Doubtless, there'd suddenly be an independent candidate... But I'm pretty sure Rice's chances are dimmer than a 25-watt bulb at the bottom of a well filled with thick black smoke at this point (if she ever had any intention of running).

I love that Greg and Iris are married. It's like Batman marrying Wonder Woman.
