My great-grandmother was known to all of us as "Grandma Pie" (short for Pyritz). I don't think she ever made it to the big New York, though.

Amy - good thing she didn't, too - she might have ended up as pizza. Anyway: it wasn't until I said it out loud that I got Paula's "Isaac Hayes" joke - until then I was thinking, Isaac Hayes, Rutherford B. Hayes...

there's another place, corner of 6th and Bergen, that has Granma slices! could this be the sinister shape of things to come?? ...actually, I've eaten a few of them, and am surprised to admit that I never expected ol' grandma to be so tasty (they do use a lot of garlic)...

Yeah, I was wondering if I was being too vague...

What exactly is on a Grandma Pie? And if it's the obvious, is the dessert Girl Scout Cookies? Granny MacGregor had a soft spot (literally and figuratively) for these wicked little pastries called Fly Cemeteries, so named for the raisin filling. "Where deh ye suppooze the flies goo in the cold weather, ye wee ninny?"

Beautiful babies, btw... little round heads and fat cheeks. Perfect.

My paternal grandmother remarried long before I was born and her last name became "Whitford," and we always called her "Grandma Whit."

One time my sister was introducing her new boyfriend to the family and mis-heard Grandma's name as "Grandma Whip"...which lends itself to some amusing imagery.
