Love (!!!!) James Blood Ulmer. He's often had these little side projects that were fairly straight ahead blues and/or funk. My favorite was Third Rail back in the mid-90s or so.

It's sad to hear that McSweeney's is falling on hard times; I have one or two of their compilations and thought they at least tried to put together interesting short fiction (and who else is doing that nowadays?). They just got into video publishing, and put out a quarterly compilation of short films called "Wholphin"; worth watching (unfortunately not Netflix-able). Appropo of nothing, a close friend of mine (and fellow N.C. alum) got a short piece published on the McSweeney's home page once; you can read it here.
