Is The Innocents the story with the two spooky young children? If it's the same one I'm thinking about that film gave me a hell of a fright way back when.

That's the one, based on Henry James's The Turn of the Screw. I was frustrated with it--it was pretty scary, but it was overacted and unfaithful to the novella....

Damn near creeped me into wet jeans. I wasn't wearing skinny wet jeans though. That came later in my teens. Then I caught sight of my thighs in a mirror and went back to regular jeans.

The Innocents struck me as at least reasonably faithful to the novella -- I know that the James tale is presented as a sort of story-within-a-story -- where the events are all related second-hand by people who are telling ghost stories to one another; and that element is eliminated from this adaptation; but other than that, it seemed like a faithful adaptation. As for the overacting... -- well, whenever you venture into melodrama-land, that just seems like it's part of the territory.

Would you mind watching an Adam Sandler movie...soon?

Um, guys? I have some suggestions... Maybe this or this or this or ...

You get the idea.

I suggest THIS

Oh damn! I was there, right before they went on, I didn't ask who it was, when I left the store, I stepped outside and was accidentally the first in line, someone asked "is this the line" and I said "well I'm not in it but I guess it is" and then I thought about that Chile Peppers song...

Oh, you must have seen her before she was in so many movies, she wus purty...

Uh, why are they called "skinny jeans"? They're only skinny if their wearer is skinny... Also: Most orders of nuns prohibit any sort of chart-topping, so perhaps it's that unusually permissive attitude that's being noted in the quote...

Paula - 2007-10-18 22:59:49
Seriously--I went through her entire filmography and I'd not seen one film!

Bina - 2007-10-18 23:40:06
Not even The King and I?

The only other Perrata book I've read besides Joe College, which you said you didn't read, was Little Children. How is the new one compared to that?

Paula - 2007-10-19 10:48:33
2ffy: don't make me make the dumb joke that's on the tip of my fingers.

Bina: Nope!

Eric: Same feel--suburban angst, laid back style, funny and warm and insightful, fairly compassionate towards most of its characters. An easy read.

Mr Lojban - 2007-10-19 13:45:21
Wait. Can I still get the dumb joke?
-------------------------------
Paula - 2007-10-19 14:37:07
OK, Mr Lojban, but [Bugs Bunny voice] I'll probably hate myself in the morning. [/bbv]

Most orders of nuns prohibit any sort of chart-topping...

...but the Regina Laudis Abbey allows their nuns to, as long as they don't get in the habit.

Aw, man!

You can go ahead & hate on y'self, but I think you're awesome.

Eric & Paula, if you enjoyed The Abstinence Teacher, you should check out The Sex Ed Chronicles by Stuart Nachbar. Similar subject matter, different style, another good read.
