I think the only song of hers I ever heard was Luka... oh wait... and that really simple one about coffee or something. Funny that I can't remember a song I probably heard a zillion times... Oh... Tom's Diner?

I love almost all of her first album (courtesy of my then-girlfriend who also introduced me to Ferron), but she just seemed to go off the rails after that. Note to self: if I ever do a music video, don't look at my hands even if I would normally need to.

don't look at my hands

Ha! I was taken aback by the Method Lip-Synching, too!

I'm quite surprised at the lack of love for Ms. Vega around here. And I'm glad she jumped those rails of her first album and continued to grow musically and lyrically throughout her career. In particular her last 2 albums "Beauty & Crime" and "Songs in Red and Gray" are masterpieces IMHO. My favorite SV song though would have to be "In Liverpool". Check out the story behind "Luka" here in her own words.

Tom, "In Liverpool" is one of the "five songs" I cryptically refer to in the post! That is an awesome, spine-tingling work.

I wish I could agree about the two albums you mention--I would be willing to go back and listen to Songs in Red & Gray, cuz it really struck me at the time as a...Snooooozanne Vega album.

Many times an artist either reaches me or doesn't depending on where my head and heart are at the time I first experience them. Suzanne Vega may or may not be the best thing since toast on a stick, but upon experiencing her those first few times I just wasn't "feeling her."

I appreciate that when she first came on the scene she was this androgynous frail/tough/smart persona in the big hair/video bimbo era...

That was a a big deal for the 22 year-old, flat-haired me. I listened to the hell out of those first two albums. When I hear any of those songs, I see my 1985 Perrier St. bedroom, with the sun streaming in the windows on a cold Saturday morning ("Cracking"). Saturday being the day of possibility and reinvention for a 22-year old wage slave. I lost interest after that, bored by 99.5 and Days of Open Hand, but Tom G's post has inspired me to revisit her.

I can't imagine being bored by 99.9! That's probably my favorite album of hers. I was a bit let down by Days of Open Hand I have to admit. But then 99.9 I thought was a stunner. 9 Objects of Desire was a bit too laid back for me, although I enjoyed a number of the tunes on it like 'No Cheap Thrill' and 'World Before Columbus'. Paula I will also revisit Songs in Red and Gray and see if it holds up to my memory of it.

99.9 is my favorite! I mean, the debut album gets points for being her first big splash into our lives, but I think 99.9 is a wonderful album-qua-album. Great songs, great production, even the packaging is cool. And I had given up on her at that point, so it was doubly nice to be wooed back.
