I've only seen bits and pieces of Nanook and know Man of Aran by rep. only. While Flaherty has been discredited as having "staged" his documentaries, I'm not sure they really contain any more pre-conceived artifice than your average Michael Moore film. The idea that it's even possible to capture something absolutely "authentic" or "truthful" seems quite ludicrous to me at this point (now that I've worked on a fair share of documentaries). I don't say that out of cynicism; it's just the certain knowledge that the camera colors a subject as much as any artist's brush -- maybe more so...
