After eight (?) years of living in Brooklyn, two of which I was a card-carrying member of the Prospect Park Alliance , I finally went to the Prospect ParkZoo.

After a somewhat stressy day of looking at rentals (coming face to face with the dark side of the New York experience), it was nice to hang out with:

  • red pandas
  • wallabies
  • emu
  • gekkos
  • lilac breasted rollers
  • demoiselle cranes (their white head fringe and bald heads reminiscent of late-70s Brian Eno)
  • red crested Turacos
  • cute but ultra-fierce tamarins
  • unbelievably cute hyraxes, meerkats, and prairie dogs
  • sea lions
  • many turtles and frogs

And yet the weirdest, most alien experience was feeding the sheep and goats. Their faces are so other-worldly.

The most satisfying part of the excursion was sitting in the baboon house, watching the baboon family frolic and cavort. I want to go back and spend some more quality time with these amazing creatures, maybe on a day when they aren't being tormented by little kids banging on the plexiglass.
