I did enjoy the list, I even emailed a response, here's a copy; I enjoyed your Xmas music list, and I completely agree with 99%, in particular, it doesn't seem like you can go wrong with a song whose title starts with the word "O". I only differ on your judgement of John Coltrane's version of "My Favorite things" (which, for me carries some of the hopeful gravitas of the "O" songs) and it's position as progenitor of "smooth jazz" which I truly despise.

S'funny, because I just heard that song--that version even--in a store yesterday, and I got to wondering just how it had become a Christmas song. Isn't it from Little Austrians Escape the Anschluss? I like it, though. I like any song with a hook and a clearly diagrammable conceit.

Ya, know I wasn't even thinking about that, I never really thought of it as an Xmas song, especially not the JC (no relation) version. But when it was conflated with schmoove jass, I just had to comment. The last time I heard a little bit of it (mostly the intro) was in that Harcey Pekar movie, and it created such a sea change, in the mood, from a clastrophobic interpersonal morass, to a world of infinite hope and possibility, I was impressed.
