I wombat - 2004-03-24 12:51:40 It does seem to be true that all lists get nasty, and most get overwhelming. But it's such a valuable way to get information that I can't give them up. Because I never agree with anyone's taste in music, I'd much rather get 20 opinions at once than one opinion from a music magazine. It's interesting to try to match mailing lists to your personality. Picking your favorite artist isn't usually the way: you have to pick an artist that isolates a fan base that you want to hear from. Too much diversity can be bad on a list, not only because of the wars, but also because of the difficulty in pegging recommendations to people's tastes. The lists I currently subscribe to are loud-fans, the Gene Clark list, and two movie mailing lists: one with a bunch of wise-ass youngsters who do a good job keeping up with the world festival circuit, and one a haven for aging auteurists. The Richard Thompson list was important to me for years, but I gave it up a while back: too much diversity, too much sadism, and so many tapes that I was getting sick of my favorite songs. And then there are the transient subscriptions, like the time I infiltrated the Contemporary Christian Music newsgroup to find Leslie Phillips albums.... ------------------------------- Paula - 2004-03-25 10:47:03 Because I never agree with anyone's taste in music, I'd much rather get 20 opinions at once than one opinion from a music magazine Bingo. I have given up reading music mags pretty much altogether because I've learned a lot more by reading lists. On a music list, you're more likely to read about stuff that people actually like and/or are obsessed by, than about whichever artist's publicist was most successful in getting him/her coverage. News groups, like Monkeywire, are also a good resource because they are usually monitored and aren't too personal--just restricted to news links. ------------------------------- athena - 2004-03-25 21:51:53 the smarttoons list on yahoo groups has some bickering but it is not overwhelming for the most part. what it also has is some pretty informed people with good things to say and some great recs. incidentally, this is where i learned about your cd! http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/SmartToons/ athena :-) ------------------------------- again wit' da F things - 2004-03-25 22:58:12 I'll probably be on Loudfans till the day it dies. Probably be posting when I'm the last person there, too. The other list I'm on right now is the Robyn Hitchcock list. In both cases, even though they have their dry/infuriating patches, the general temperament and kinds of interests are compatible with my own (although why Robyn, of all people, should attract such a horde of computer fetishists, I'll never know). Was on the Wire list...dunno, never quite got that into it; was on the Fall list: fun, but too reflective of the personality of MES - snide, brilliant/cracked, abusive, insightful in equal degrees. (I might be interested, but am far too frightened to investigate whether there's a Julian Cope list.) Plus prolific as hell. Have been on XTC, Liz Phair, and Posies lists: the last two (several years ago) for some reason had too many very young people arguing over t-shirt distribution logistics or some other triviality. Oh - and there's a list that NOBODY KNOWS ABOUT! Shhhh. ------------------------------- Paula - 2004-03-26 15:32:39 Hi, Athena! I actually joined SmartToons a while back, but because I don't get the e-mails (I just read the messages at the site), I always forget about it. But I do check in every few months. 2FF's: ...there's a list that NOBODY KNOWS ABOUT Dude! No way! is it about hte sanctity of Mary Magdalene? ------------------------------- add your comment: |
