Sorry to ruin the illusion, but the singer from the Great Outdoors missed a whole verse of "Lily, Rosemary, etc." I know this only because I was in the first row and he handed me the lyric sheet so I could cue him in case something went wrong.

Woops! Which verse, do you remember? And why didn't you jump up and scream?

I'm pretty sure the missed verse was "Lily's arms were locked around the man that she dearly loved to touch/She forgot all about the man she couldn't stand who hounded her so much/"I've missed you so," she said to him, and he felt she was sincere/But just beyond the door he felt jealousy and fear/Just another night in the life of the Jack of Hearts." I tried to make eye contact with the dude, but he didn't know he'd made a mistake, and I figured 15 out of 16 wasn't bad.

That verse doesn't even ring a bell...maybe it's not on the record? Anyone have ten minutes or so?

Very interesting! You're right, this verse isn't on my copy of the album. Furthermore, the Great Outdoors singer missed a few other words on his printout: he said, "Lily took her dress off..." instead of "Lily washed her face, took her dress off..." And "washed her face" is also missing on my album! So the Great Outdoors singer was in fact amazingly letter-perfect, but both his lyric sheet and half of the ones I see on the web have an expanded set of lyrics.

Solution to mystery: there is Sept. 1974 version of the album, recorded in New York, that Dylan rewrote and rerecorded over Xmas 1974. The extra words come from the New York version. It's interesting that so many lyrics on the web are from the revised version - lots of hardcore fans out there.

Coupla things: the singer for The Great Outdoors on this evening was Craig Addams. Hub Moore was the GOds lead singer back when we were a going concern, 1990-1992, when Craig was the bassist. The GOds don't play anymore except for tribute shows like this one. Craig has always had a gift for remembering lyrics and very long poems. He used to show off this talent back in the day by busting out "Lily Rosemary" at parties. His song to sing in The GOds was "Ca Plan Pour Moi", in perfect Flemish (Belgian French?), just like Plastic Bertrand. Craig grew up in Belgium! Talented feller. Great job on "Buckets of Rain," Monkey-Girl!

Thanks for the historical perspective and compliment, Sharples. Also: between Craig and Hub, the GOds must have been the tallest band in town.

And you don't even mention the lead guitarist Dan who is over 6 ft.! I felt like a shrub in the forest at a measley 5'11". Funny thing: I was the one who printed out the lyrics (got 'em from a Dylan lyric website) for Craig and I didn't even notice that extra verse!
