In honor of this moment, my favorite Andy Mattina story: While I was recording in Wash, D.C., Andy accepted my invitation to drive down to play bass on two numbers (Andy will travel any distance to help out a fellow musician, or to see Grateful Dead-related shows). After the session, late in the evening I forced Andy to drive deep into the Virginia suburbs to my producer's house, where we would stay the night. I warned him it would be a long drive, but even his endless patience began to wear thin as we drove on, and on. "Shahples. I can't believe how fah we gotta drive." Finally, we turned off the main road onto an unlit country road. Then we crossed a wooden bridge, which was the final straw. "We just drove ovah a wooden bridge! This cah has nevah driven over wood...of any kind!" Happy Birthday, Mister M.!
