I like both your guilty pleasures.

My entry in the Truly Disreputable Pleasure category: Rod McKuen. I like his songs.

For years and years, my guilty pleasure was ABBA. I stood by them in the 1980s when they were about as fashionable as a wide-lapeled leisure suit. I think "Knowing Me, Knowing You" might be the greatest song ever written. Needless to say, it's been bizarre to see ABBA not just enjoyed but positively embraced during the past decade. (Yes, I've seen both Bjorn Again and "Mamma Mia.") Today, I don't think anything is truly disparaged; if nothing else, we can smirk at it on a VH1 special. Look at all the "cool" bands that have covered Britney and the Carpenters. There's even going to be a Barry Manilow tribute night at a trendy bar in SF next month. I guess I might shock people if I confessed to liking Kenny G or the recordings of Kathie Lee Gifford (I don't -- just an example), but I can't think of much else that would cause even the most jaded hipster to raise an eyebrow.

I don't believe in guilty pleasures. Or, "so bad it's good." If I like a song, there must be something truly good about it, right? I like Britney Spears' "Toxic,", and many Journey songs. Richard Thompson covered "Oops I Did it Again," because it's a good song, not because he was being ironic. Also, at no time has Stephen Stills ever been uncool. However, I admit, I have never understood Dan's Rod McKuen thing.

I just remembered something. When I was about twelve, riding in the car with my Granny, Love the One Your With came on the radio. I asked her what it meant. And she said, "well...it means...if you can't be with the one you love...love the one you're with." Uhh, thanks, Granny.
