For me, it's Thomas Jefferson. More than anyone, he understood what a democracy could and should be. He believed in the separation of church & state. Yes, he owned slaves - and took the moral low ground when it came to slave ownership. But his contribution to the formation and stabilization of this country - to my mind - cannot be downplayed.

Does Thomas Paine count as a founding father?

And, um, did Pacino sing a karaoke version of Smokey Robinson's "Cruising" in that movie?

I'll have to go with the original, and unquestionably the best Dubyah - George Washington.

I love jefferson--a true Renaissance man with a real social conscience (er, except for the slavery conundrum). Paine would count, I s'pose. Were it not for his pamphleteering, we may still be eating clotted cream with scones for breakfast. No, "Cruising" stayed away from Motown in favor of Mink DeVille and other kinda lame, dated new wave-ish acts. Re: Dubya: ha! You know Washington was given free reign, told he could be "king" if he wanted, and he declined, saying, "Nah, let's rotate this leadership thing." I admire him for that.

Ya well, I kinda figured Pacino didn't sing "Cruising" in "Cruising". But wouldn't it have been great if he and Michelle Pfeifer had done a karoake version in Scarface, in character? And then he could've shot anybody who didn't appreciate it....

Speaking as a shrimpy person who hates to hem (hawing, however, is fine): if it weren't for cropped pants I'd never wear pants at all.

Maybe I should amend my statement to say that do look cute on pixieish gals, and in the summertime they are a necessary evil for those of us who are too self-conscious to wear shorts. I actually own a coupla pairs. But still.

I think Pipsqueak may be saying she does what I sometimes do: buy cropped pants and wear them as regular-length pants. If you're a shorty like me, no one is the wiser, and you don't have to have them altered. It's a useful strategy, seeing as how many pants manufacturers seem convinced that people who wear a size six are in fact six feet tall.

Oh, I get it! Yes, good strategy!
