Following your lead of discussing/commenting upon "uplifting" films, I am saddened to report that America's greatest cinematic auteur -- Russ Meyer -- passed away yesterday at the ripe old age of 82. The director of such classics as "Faster Pussycat, Kill, Kill" and "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" 'uplifted' many a male cineaste in his heyday (and probably a few female ones as well . . .), and indeed, these same viewers were amazed, astounded, even hypnotized by the 'uplifting' qualities of the many starlets he featured in the over 26 movies that he produced, directed, photgraphed, edited and usually wrote as well. If any filmmaker of the last 50 years deserves the title of auteur, it's Meyer. R.I.P.

Just read that Roger Ebert had co-written Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. Didn't know that.

BTVOTD is a great movie, as long as you don't mind bad acting. Sue & I were going to cover a Carrie Nations song until we realized that I can't play music worth a damn.

The soundtrack is great, many memorable tunes. "Come with the Gentle People," "Look on Up (at the Bottom),"...etc.

I just saw BTVOTD on TV the last month, and I was amazed. It is a truly great film. Paula, we should definitely cover a Carrie Nations tune, maybe on New Year's Eve.
