I've only been there once, and sorta know what you're talking about... I guess it's a particularly evocative beach... at least when uncrowded.

For some reason Jones Beach was my parent's preferred seaside getaway -- although as often as not, we'd get there and spend most of our time by their enormous swimming pool -- but at least that beach smell would be in the air. My parents also took me to many a show at the Jones Beach Theater (does it still even exist?). Maybe that explains my love of "The Sound of Music" (and let's hope the explanation isn't my half-German ancestry)

Poison and Cinderella are playing at Jones Beach this summer... seriously. I'm almost inclined to go just to see if they bust out the spandex, or bust out of the spandex.

Jones Beach Theater (does it still even exist?).

If Greg's comment didn't answer your question: yeah, they have a decent outdoor theater there. I haven't seen any shows, but I've heard good things.

I'm sure this dates me, but when my parents would take me there I don't recall seeing any signs of Twisted Sister or Whitesnake -- Through the summer it was all Broadway-style shows: "Carousel", "Fiddler on the Roof", the afore mentioned "Sound of Music". As I recall, it was a nice venue. My prevailing memory of Jones Beach itself are the stern warnings from my folks of the dire consequences of entering the water within an hour of eating lunch. The way they hammered it into my brain I thought I would explode if I even wiggled my big toe in the water within 60 minutes of swallowing so much as a piece of Pez candy.

I've seen a pretty big variety of shows over the years at Jones Beach Theater--Renaissance--Molly Hatchett, Charlie Daniels and The Outlaws (yeehaw)--The Pretenders, Van Morrison, Cyndi Lauper, probably a lot more and most recently, the Stooges. And a stern warning from personal experience: Skinny-dipping at Jones Beach at any time of day or night is against the law and they will arrest you. Getting busted and hauled in with no clothes really rather stinks. Pez rules though!

p.s. I just checked with my mom who is an expert and she says you can have up to 12 Pez and still go in the water. After that you're probably going to die.

I've seen three shows over the years at Jones Beach, (10,000 Maniacs, Sting, The Dead). It rained at all three. Beautiful beach weather! They don't serve alcohol, boo hoo!
